Join us for a free educational outreach presentation that will focus not only on the alternatives to physician-assisted suicide and the Christian perspective, but also the non-spiritual “rational” response to the narrative that PAS is a compassionate option and individual choice. Faith-based arguments alone are unlikely to sway secular-minded supporters of PAS, including politicians and national organizations that push for state-by state legalization. For the last 2 years physician-assisted suicide (PAS) bills have been submitted to the MD state legislature, and last year the mayor of DC signed a PAS bill into law. Visiting presenter Rev. Joel Gaertner testified last year as an expert witness before the Minnesota state legislature when they were considering legalization of PAS. His work with the developmentally disabled and those at the end of life has given him valuable insight into how PAS puts the disabled, in particular, at risk. Author Michael McCarthy will be presenting and signing copies of his book, Confederate Waterloo. "It could be classified as a mere skirmish, but no other fight of the entire four years' struggle was followed by such important consequences," explained former Confederate General Thomas Munford years after the Civil War. "It extinguished the campfires of the hitherto invincible army and was the mortal blow which caused the Southern Confederacy to perish forever." The Battle of Five Forks broke the long siege of Petersburg, triggered the evacuation of Richmond, precipitated the Appomattox Campaign, and destroyed the careers and reputations of two generals. Michael J. McCarthy's Confederate Waterloo is the first fully researched and unbiased book-length account of this decisive Union victory and the aftermath fought in the courts and at the bar of public opinion.
